Founded in Compassion • Rooted in Community • Driven by Youth • Powered by LOVE •
From our humble beginnings as a small program run in the basement of a Montreal college to becoming a trusted emotional and social support resource for young Nova Scotians, this is our LOVE Story.
LOVE's Roots
LOVE was founded in 1993 by Sheila "Twinkle" Rudberg, who was inspired to end the cycle of violence in the lives of youth. After losing her husband to a tragic act of youth violence, she came to see that the youth himself was also a victim. What began as a small photojournalism project in the basement of Montreal's Dawson College soon grew into a national program helping young people find healing and purpose through creativity and connection.
LOVE in Nova Scotia
LOVE Nova Scotia began in January 2000 with one program and 15 youth.
Today, we support over 300 youth every year across Halifax, Sipekne'katik, and Membertou First Nation through eight programs focused on creativity, leadership, and emotional well-being.
Every youth has 24/7 access to a Youth Worker and Registered Social Worker because care should never stop at the end of the day.
Our Youth
LOVE youth are bright, caring, and resilient. We often meet them during challenging moments when they feel disconnected or unsure of themselves, and we walk beside them until they rediscover their strength. Many stay connected into their twenties, returning as camp staff, facilitators, and community leaders who help the next generation thrive.
Our Impact and Legacy
From a single photojournalism workshop in Montreal to a network of programs across Canada, LOVE continues to grow through community trust, creativity, and care.
Our work in Nova Scotia is rooted in relationships that last, inspiring youth to lead with compassion and courage.
When youth believe they are valued, they change their lives and their communities.
